Ask Me How I’m Doing

Last month the youth focused on relationships with each other.  We worked hard to truly get to know and trust each other.  This takes honesty and a willingness to be vulnerable.  We told stories about events from our past that have shaped who we are.  We learned things that we have in common, and did several trust exercises.  We also made fools of ourselves while singing Karaoke during our 1st Annual Lock-In.

So many times both youth and adults go through life thinking we have to appear perfect, like we have it all together.  Often that is far from the case.  When the question, “How are you?” is asked, most people answer with a positive response such as, “I’m good, how are you?” Why do we do this?  We often don’t want to burden others with our problems, we don’t have time to explain our situation, or we realize we are good, our problems could be worse.

The band, Casting Crowns sings a song called, “Broken Together”.  The song is about a marriage, but the lesson I’ve taken from it is that we all should be honest with one another.  It’s okay to admit when we are struggling.  Most likely, you’ll find someone who is feeling the same way or someone who can speak wisdom into your life and encourage you.  In turn, our faith and our relationships within our church family can grow.

Last month at the women’s retreat, it was wonderful to share our brokenness with friends, to connect with women who are a part of our church family, and in turn, improve our relationship with Christ.  It has also been wonderful to see the youth open up and trust one another.  I encourage you to do the same.  Galatians 6:2 says, “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”  Just be prepared if you decide to ask me how I’m doing.
